Manhole No# 1 and the Benefits of Looking Up

Medium: Photography/ Installation
In an assuming corner of a gallery a collection of pink post-it notes reveal a little known statistic:
Look up!
Actually observations have indicated (an experiment was conducted at Manchester University in October 1989), that 42% of the time our head is aimed directly forward,
56% of the time downward
And only 3% of the time upward.
At the very same time, it was noted that it is precisely in this last instance that the outflow of negative emotion occurs, a calming of the mental processes, and an inflow of lofty ennobling thoughts and feelings.
It is then the viewer is compelled to look up, activating the installation element. A manhole is revealed in the ceiling; framed within it, the viewer is rewarded with a beautiful photograph of the sky. In Wanda’s words, ‘The manhole becomes a portal, a reminder of the illusion of this reality.’
‘the encounter with the incongruously placed window immediately drew a smile; a visceral response, tied not to the prank involved, but to the pleasure derived from the unexpected intrusion of the natural world.’ Justine Grace, UN Magazine.
